Janet S. Muehl, 30 year veteran nurse
for McKinley Elementary School and recipient of the
prestigious Points of Light Foundation Award is being
remembered by family, former colleagues, and friends
with the establishment of a memorial fund through the
Franklin McKinley Education Foundation.
Living by the creed, “You breathe,
and you give.” Janet’s life was dedicated
to children’s physical and social health, political,
and economic justice for the disadvantaged, and a love
of nature. Her significant contributions before retirement
in 1997 include: early work in bringing basic dental
services to her school community, pioneering efforts
in conflict resolution as a health issue at schools,
and home visits for immigrant “surrogate children”
from Vietnam and Mexico.
Janet’s legacy of giving and community
service in the predominantly poor, working class, immigrant
community of the McKinley area will continue through
the memorial fund created by daughters Karen and Jennifer.
The family hopes that donations to this fund will finance
a lasting gift that will touch the lives of children
and families, as Janet had done throughout her inspirational
career and life.
